Admissions – Frequently Asked Questions

Can I submit an Options for Knowledge application?

Namaste Charter School can only accept its own applications; other types/forms of applications (such as the Options for Knowledge application) cannot be accepted.

What do I need to do to apply?

You only need to complete the application in order to apply. No other information or materials are needed at this time. However, the application must be completed in its entirety in order to be entered into the lottery.

Will it help my child’s chances for admission if I turn in my application early?

While we appreciate the extra time to process an application that is received early during the application window, early applications cannot be given preference in the lottery. By state law, any application received prior to the application deadline is admitted to the lottery and given an equal chance to be selected for admission.

My child has a cousin who attends Namaste. Will this help their chances for admission?

Illinois Charter School Law only provides that preference for admission be given to siblings of current Namaste students. Unfortunately, cousins of current Namaste students cannot be given preference in the lottery.

I submitted an application for my student last year, and he/she is currently on the waiting list. Do I need to resubmit another application?

Yes, anyone who is not a current Namaste student will need to submit a 2014-15 application.

My child currently attends Namaste, do I need to submit an application for him to attend next year?

No, you do not need to complete the 2014-15 application. However, current students at Namaste do need to complete the re-enrollment forms distributed in January to clarify their intent to attend Namaste for the 2014-15 school year.

My child currently attends Namaste, and she has a sibling who attends another elementary school. How do I enroll her at Namaste for the 2014-15 school year?

By Illinois Charter School Law, preference for admission must be given to those who have siblings already enrolled at Namaste. If there are more sibling applications than there are available spots in a classroom, Namaste will be required to hold a lottery of the sibling applications. Those siblings not admitted through the lottery will be put on the top of the waiting list for that classroom in the order that their names were drawn from the pool. If there are no spots available in a classroom, a lottery will still be held to determine the order of the siblings at the top of the waiting list for that classroom.

I would like to talk with some teachers and administrators before deciding to complete an application. How do I do that?

Open houses are an opportunity for families to tour the school and get an overview of Namaste’s curriculum and educational philosophy. The teachers lead the tours. There are opportunities throughout the open house to talk with administrators and teachers to learn more about the school and to get your individual questions answered.

The 2014 – 15 open house dates and times are:

Thursday, January 30th at 5:00pm

Saturday, February 8th at 10:00am

Thursday, February 27th at 5:00pm

I cannot attend an open house. Can I call the school and schedule a private tour?

Unfortunately, due to staffing constraints, we are unable to accommodate requests to tour the school outside of our scheduled open house times.

I currently live in the suburbs, but I plan to move to the city this summer. Can I still apply for my child to attend Namaste?

Per Illinois Charter School Law, Namaste is only open to students that live within the city of Chicago. You may still apply for the lottery, but you must show evidence of residing in Chicago by April 2014 (two documents showing proof of residency are required).

How do I know if my child has been selected for admission?

On April 17, 2014 in the school cafeteria, Namaste will hold a public lottery to select students. Once the number of selected applications equals the number of available slots for each grade, the remaining applicants are included on a waitlist in the order they were drawn from the pool. Within two days of the lottery, notification of admission or waiting list placement will be mailed to all families that submitted an application.

How long is your school day and do you have an afterschool program?

The school day is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the students are dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Breakfast is served daily starting at 7:45 a.m., and students are welcome to arrive anytime after 7:45 a.m. Namaste offers afterschool programming until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, Namaste partners with the local YMCA to offer afterschool programming from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
